Foundations of Reiki

What is Reiki; A Basic Introduction (and some of My Experiences With Reiki)

The most common answer is that Reiki is an ancient Japanese energy system. Reiki originated in Japan with Mikao Usui in the early 1900’s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikao_Usui There are many books to verify further evidence, aside from Wikipedia, which is not always accurate. For instance, this is a great book, for those wanting more information: An Evidence Based History of Reiki, by William Lee Rand (Author) . Or another evidence-based book is The Great Bright Light, by Daniel Payne.

The Great Bright Light: Mikao Usui and the Origins of Usui Reiki by Daniel Payne RMT (Author)

Either of these books will provide a rich foundation if you are so inclined to learn more. There are an abundance of Reiki types and all are equally as good, as far as I know, as long as they are learned from a qualified teacher of a qualified lineage. All Reiki is based on the teachings of Mikao Usui. Instead of repeating what Reiki is technically, for my blog post, I will share a story of my experiences with Reiki. While having my first reiki session, I felt some tingling sensations and warmth in the area of my body, where the Reiki practitioners hands were. I remember leaving and thinking that it was not what I expected, it was less than. (Please note: I had a very qualified Reiki Master, my disappointment wasn’t any reflection on them!) I was a bit disappointed, to be honest, as I did not know what to expect, but I didn’t really feel anything. I did have some gentle tears leak out during the session for a few minutes, but that was the most memorable part. I did not feel sad, I just felt the tears (which is common during a session-it’s the body releasing). Over the next few days I started to notice a feeling of relief from stress and that I was not as reactive, as I normally was, and realized that could be from the reiki. The calm stayed with me for a couple of weeks. I took Reiki level 1 and 2 courses a couple of months after that first session. I had more calm and patience over the next days, where I previously would be tense and uptight. I can’t explain how it works, I just know that it does. Reiki is a gentle energy that fills your body during a session (even if you feel nothing, reiki is there) and does it’s work, to help you feel a bit more calm and, at least for me, removed the stressful, edgy feelings. I started giving myself Reiki every day for just a few minutes. I like the feeling of knowing reiki is pushing out what no longer serves me and leaves me feeling more relaxed and ready to face the day. Reiki knows where to go; I know that sounds woo-woo, but I truly believe it. I am using my own experiences, to share, honestly with you, dear reader. This is what I know about what Reiki is and what it does for me. I have become a Master Reiki Teacher and Practitioner, which does not mean that I have Mastered the art of reiki, but far from! A Master Reiki Teacher is a person that has taken 3 or 4 levels of courses and learned the basics to teach and practice Reiki. I have so much to learn about Reiki, even after 4 years of practicing Reiki. I still feel new and the more I do reiki, the more I am seeing positive changes in my life. As a Reiki practitioner, I have had clients tell me their pain is lessened, they feel like a weight is lifted, they feel lighter and that they slept much better after a session, when they haven’t had a good nights sleep in weeks. When I get this feedback, I do not take credit for their gains, I am just passing Reiki through me into them. Reiki is doing the work. I feel blessed that I am facilitating the process, but I am just the carrier of the amazing energy that Reiki is. These are all true things my clients have said to me when I follow up after a session. I don’t share them to brag about me, for it is not me that is doing the work, I do not take any credit, it is all Reiki energy. If you are at all curious, try a session with a person that has had proper training by a qualified teacher. Do your research and find someone you are comfortable with – there are enough Reiki Masters today that you should be able to find someone, in any area of the world. I would love to hear your stories of your first Reiki experiences and how it has helped you. Be sure to share where you are in the world, as well, so I can send some Reiki your way.

Kindest Blessings,

From My Reiki Space in Canada, to you, wherever you are.
